The
passion for baking hit Julie Lane when she was very young. At 12
she was making chocolate mousse cakes and they are still one of
her biggest sellers. She also decided at 12 that she wanted to go
to culinary school, and after graduating from the University of
Vermont with a Biology degree, she did. In 1993 she graduated from
New England Culinary Institute with a degree in culinary arts. Slice
of Life was born in 1994.
| Slice
of Life set out to fulfill two goals: |
| |
to make wedding cakes and special occasion cakes that tasted
as good as they looked |
| |
to make Julies awesome scones
available as ready-to-bake scone dough, which people could bake
as needed to enjoy fresh home-baked scones |
In
1997 Julie married Kai Mayberger, whom she met in 1980 as a camper
at the Farm and Wilderness Summer Camps in Plymouth, Vermont. Kai
also works from home. His business is White
Raven Drum Works. He makes wooden hand drums, Native American
flutes and didjeridus.
In
1999 Julie and Kai were blessed with twin boys, Aidan and Dune Mayberger.
The twins keep Julie and Kai busy when they are not making wedding
cakes and flutes.
Where
did Julie and Kai build such a wonderful life? In Bridgewater, Vermont,
which is between Woodstock, VT and Killington, VT on Route 4. Julie
works out of her home kitchen, which is licensed by the state. Kais
gallery is next door in their remodeled garage. Keeping their work
close to home allows them both to be fully involved in raising Dune
and Aidan and to participate in a thriving local community
